Floral Bedroom Mural Ideas and How I Design a Hand-Painted Mural
A floral mural can change the whole feeling of a bedroom. It turns a plain wall into something soft and calming, a little like waking up in a garden. I recently painted a floral bedroom mural for family in Nottingham, and I wanted to share how it came together, from the very first mood board to the final brushstroke.
Starting with a mood board
Every mural I paint begins with a mood board. Before I think about any flowers in detail, I want to understand how the room should feel. For this bedroom, the brief was romantic, calming nature-inspired and classy, so I gathered colours, flowers, textures and interiors that captured that mood.
The mood board helps us agree on the direction together before any design work starts. It's also where I look at what's already in the room, like the bedding, furniture and flooring, so the mural feels as though it has always belonged there.

Designing the mural in layers
Once the mood is set, I design the mural in Photoshop using layered elements. Each flower, leaf and stem sits on its own layer, which means I can move, resize and rearrange everything until the composition feels balanced. It's very similar to how I worked in architecture and interior design, building up a design piece by piece and testing ideas before anything is final.
Working in layers also makes it easy to try different versions. If a client would like more flowers around the bed or a lighter feel near the window, I can adjust the design quickly without starting again.
Mapping the design onto the wall
Next, I map the design onto a photograph of the actual wall in Photoshop. This shows exactly how the mural will sit around the doors, windows, sockets and furniture, and it gives the client a realistic preview of their finished room. Seeing the mural in place helps us make any final changes with confidence. Getting the design right before we arrive means we can start painting straight away and make the most of our time on site.
Adding architecture with moulded arches
For this bedroom, I used moulding to create two arches on the wall. The arches frame the floral design and give the room a sense of structure, almost like looking through a garden window. Adding real architectural detail like this is one of my favourite things to do, and it comes straight from my background in interiors. Paint and moulding together can give a room depth that paint alone can't quite achieve.
Projecting and sketching
When it's time to paint, I use a projector to beam the design onto the wall and sketch the outlines in place. This keeps the scale and proportions true to the design we agreed on.
Not everything is projected, though. Some elements are drawn by hand from sight, which lets me respond to the wall itself and keep a natural, flowing feel. I find that mix of careful planning and freehand drawing is what gives a hand-painted mural its character.
Painting the floral mural
Then the painting begins. I use a mix of emulsion and acrylics, as each one does a different job. I start with emulsion to create a soft wash of colour across the background, which gives the mural a subtle sense of depth and layering so the scene doesn't look flat. Once that's in place, I switch to acrylics for the detail, especially the bird, where every feather needs a fine, crisp finish.
I work with a whole range of brushes, from large, wide brushes for the background wash to tiny ones for the smallest details. Every petal is painted by hand, so no two murals are ever the same.

Floral bedroom mural ideas
If you're thinking about a mural for your own bedroom, here are a few ideas to inspire you:
A feature wall behind the bed. This creates a natural focal point and works beautifully with a soft, trailing floral design.
Painted or moulded arches. Arches frame the design and add a sense of architecture to the room.
Flowers that match your interiors. Picking up colours from your bedding, curtains or furniture ties the room together.
A mural that wraps around a corner. It makes the room feel immersive, as though the garden carries on beyond the wall.
Subtle, tonal florals. These suit anyone who loves the idea of a mural but prefers a calmer, more understated look.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a bedroom mural take to paint?
Most bedroom murals take between two and five days on site, depending on how complex the design is, plus a day or two of design work beforehand. Spending that time getting the design right means we arrive ready to start straight away, so we make the most of every day in your home.
How much does a hand-painted floral mural cost?
Our murals start from £1,000, and every project is quoted individually depending on the size of the wall and the level of detail.
Do you only paint murals in Nottingham?
We're based in Nottingham and paint murals across the Midlands, London and the rest of the UK. Travel is charged at 50p per mile over 50 miles with an overnight stay at £100 for every 2 hours of driving or if the project is over multiple days outside our 50 mile radius.
